Christien Meindertsma: a poetic look behind the scenes of industrial production

Vitra Design Gallery, Weil am Rhein, Germany

From 18 August 2018 to 21 January 2019

Opening 17 August

The exhibition Christien Meindertsma: Beyond the Surface at the Vitra Design Museum features projects by the German designer who looks behind the scenes of modern industrial production with a poetic gaze, exploring the themes of sustainability, research on materials and the life cycle of products.

The show presents the most important works of Christien Meindertsma and new research projects. It demonstrates how designers can maintain a critical viewpoint on the manmade environment to create new and surprising everyday objects.

In her book PIG 05049, for example, the designer has documented all the products derived from the various parts of a single pig.

The Flax Chair, on the other hand, is a minimal but elegant seat made with an innovative material based on flax fiber.
