Overalls and steel

Galleria d’Arte Moderna – Rome – Until 3 March 2019 – An anti-rhetorical monument dedicated to the workers of Ilva and the city of Taranto

 

With the installation Le tute e l’acciaio, a new site-specific work by the sculptor Antonio Fraddosio, art comes to grips with reality, in particular the dramatic story of Ilva in Taranto, transported to the Italian capital.

Working on the spaces of the cloister-garden of the Galleria d’Arte Moderna, Antonio Fraddosio shows ten large twisted, torn sheets of metal, powerful and mysterious, reminders of the overalls that were supposed to protect the workers at Ilva from tumors, abandoned at the end of a work shift in a sort of compensation chamber.

Together with the Cor-ten caissons made as containers for the individual works, similar to the structures of buildings or industrial plants, the installation becomes an anti-rhetorical monument to the Ilva workers and the city of Taranto, a universal protest against all the situations in which the right to work is gained only by sacrifice of health and even life.
