Capital of Culture 2018, Palermo is also hosting the latest edition of the contemporary art biennial Manifesta, from June to November, this year on the theme of “coexistence.” In fact this city has always been a laboratory of diversity, a node on a migratory map alternately ruled by various cultures.

In this context, New York University has organized an exhibition titled ReSignifications at Cantieri Culturali alla Zisa – Zona Arte Contemporanee (ZAC), curated by Awam Amkpa.

Until 30 September about 150 works by 44 international contemporary artists will be on view (including photographs, sculptures, paintings and videos), along with six historical works (multicolored Moor sculptures) from the Acton Collection of Villa La Pietra in Florence.

The artists from Africa, Europe and the Americas have been invited by the Nigerian curator Awam Amkpa, a theater director and film producers who teaches at NYU, and by Ellyn Toscano, director of NYU Florence, to reinterpret the portrayal of African bodies through photography, painting, sculpture and video, installations and performances.
