Vintage quilts for 100 one-offs of the Feltri chair designed by Gaetano Pesce for Cassina, in an installation created by Raf Sim

An ironic interpretation on a royal throne, the Feltri chair designed by Gaetano Pesce for Cassina in 1987 has been reissued in a series of 100 numbered pieces using vintage American quilts, based on the personal research of Raf Simons, creative director of Calvin Klein, among the symbols of American culture.

Simons, a fan of Gaetano Pesce’s work, has chosen the iconic chair for its ability to interpret timeless codes of craftsmanship. The quilts date back to the 19th and 20th centuries, applied to the inner upholstery of the chairs to conserve their characteristic wraparound structure in thick wool felt.

Fifty pieces in the series were presented at Design Miami Basel (12-17 June 2018) – 35 were sold at the opening – while the second group of 50 will be available for purchase from Cassina.

For the fair, Calvin Klein presented the chairs in a barn, an American architectural archetype, made of recycled wood from the 19th century.

The walls were covered with works of art by Andy Warhol, in billboard format, also as a reminder of the partnership between Calvin Klein and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.
