Kazuyo Sejima, Ryue Nishizawa with Rolf Fehlbaum, president of Vitra, have presented the industrial logistics center of the company. By commissioning the work to SANAA, Vitra continues with its strategy, developed over the last 25 years, of hiring internationally acclaimed contemporary architects to create projects for the Vitra Campus. The major projects by SANAA to date are almost all cultural and university facilities, and the principles involved are to some extent the same for the industrial plant at Weil am Rhein. After in-depth analysis of the requirements of the client, the designers decided to revise the premises of the work. Instead of making four orthogonal volumes to fit into the architectural grid of the Campus, they have opted for a single round building. This unusual proposal was based on the realization that logistical and production processes, today, are no longer based on rigid hierarchical factors, but require greater flexibility. Though the circle is seldom the form of industrial sheds, in Weil am Rhein it is perfectly suited to the needs of the site.
