A week of events, meetings, workshops, exhibitions and tours organized at strategic sites around the city going through a phase of urban regeneration, such as Via Sacchi, the Cavallerizza Reale, Torino Incontra, Lingotto Fiere, Circolo del Design: all this is Torino Design of the City.

“The method of industrial design is applied today to increasingly immaterial products, widening the field of application from traditional items to processes and services, with the goal of contributing to create better conditions of life for all. This is why the focus on the city, the central theme of this event organized in Turin, is important as a further phase of reflection on the growth path of the discipline,” says Luisa Bocchietto, president-elect of WDO for the term 2017/2019.

The World Design Organization, after 34 years, again chooses an Italian city for its biennial convention. Founded in 1957 as ICSID (International Council of Societies of Industrial Design) and based in Montreal, WDO celebrates its 60 anniversary this year, gathering together 140 associations that focus on promoting design around the world, in 40 nations and on 6 continents. Besides World Design Capital, WDO moves forward with other international programs, including: World Design Talks, World Design Impact Prize, World Industrial Design Day.

“Design brings industry, services, culture, sustainability and education together, and it is a fundamental tool of territorial development. So we believe that Torino Design of the City, besides being an initiative that puts our city at the center of a series of national and international relations in a fundamental area of economic development, is also strategic as a way to draw the attention of everyone – citizens and experts – to the new trends in a sector that has an impact on everyday life all over the world,” the Mayor of Turin Chiara Appendino remarked.

Torino Design of the City has been organized thanks to the joint efforts of the Torino Design Advisory Board, which involves over 30 public and private entities – including sector associations, schools, archives and museums – and a coordinating committee formed by vice-mayor Guido Montanari and the City Councilors for Culture, Francesca Leon; for Circulation, Maria Lapietra; for Education, Federica Patti; for Innovation, Paola Pisano; and for Commerce, Alberto Sacco.
