With the Ypperlig mirrors, accessories become protagonists in the home

Warm and durable, the objects of the Ypperlig collection catch the eye. Mette Hay drew inspiration from trends and fashion, but the results are timeless products
Data Pubblicazione: 3 October 2017

We are living in a time in which it is important to share experiences, and in the future partnerships will be increasingly decisive. The hard part is to choose the right ones, where both parties make a contribution.” This awareness has prompted Hay, the Danish design company founded by Mette and Rolf Hay, and IKEA, one of the world’s most famous furniture brands, to join forces for the creation of a collection that brings two worlds together.

The collaboration has been very fertile, leading to a collection of functional, intelligent and beautiful products for everyday use, and an experience worth remembering. The design couple Mette and Rolf Hay have learned to simplify complex things even further, to find solutions affordable for all. At the same time, IKEA has gained the Ypperlig collection, which represents the beauty and functional quality of small things in everyday life.

Rolf has focused on the larger pieces, while Mette has designed the smaller furnishing complements, the ones that catch the eye. She has worked on the fabrics, the washable double-face covers of the cushions, the blankets with anti-pilling finish, the aluminium boxes with an “always open” cover. She also updated the classic IKEA candlesticks, and the iconic bag, which in Mette’s hands has dropped its classic blue and embraced new trendy colors. The Ypperlig accessories bring the home alive with emotions.

Among the coolest accessories created by Mette, the mirrors are items that can reveal the soul of a person or a home. Made with aluminium in three sizes and colors (white, dark red and green), with rounded forms, they are perfect for any corner or position. They can be placed at the entrance, or in a corner of the living area, inside a wardrobe, or in the bathroom – they have been tested to stand up to moisture. Mette’s idea? To increase the thickness and add a small shelf for keys, postcards, cosmetics and jewelry. Functional and practical.

Find your creative spirit on the shelves

Wood has always been one of IKEA’s favorite materials, and in the encounter with a designer like Rolf Hay its characteristics are further enhanced. The Ypperlig collection is simple and functional, but also warm and welcoming, like all IKEA products
Data Pubblicazione: 3 October 2017

Giving space to life is one of the slogans that has always set IKEA apart. The Swedish furniture giant does this not only by designing innovative solutions for every setting, but also by choosing living materials like wood, which changes over time, ages and fills every home with its warmth.

If wood is accompanied by cooler materials like steel, the combination creates a dynamic, functional mood. It is precisely this functional approach that IKEA and Rolf Hay had in mind when they decided to form a partnership for the creation of a new collection. To create something unique that would be warm, efficient and beautiful precisely in everyday use. Rolf Hay, founder of the Danish design firm of the same name, together with his wife Mette, wanted to create articles for IKEA that would defy time, marked by impeccable style.

The result is Ypperlig, a collection that includes monoblock chairs, very slim LED lamps, sofas in Nordic style that are also perfect for sleeping, large and small tables, benches and mirrors. Each item has been studied to be simple but aesthetically appealing. The same is true of the shelves created by Hay, in birch and powder-coated steel. Every shelf in a home is unique, because every person can fill it up with his or her essence, personality, hobbies, memories. Books, photographs, boxes, beloved objects. The shelf takes on life from the objects its hosts, so it has to have a minimal design: the protagonists are the little things of life.

The Ypperlig collection offers three shelving units, two of which are large and spacious: a three-shelf version with a height of 90 cm, and a five-shelf unit, 166 cm high. One of the favorites of the collection is the wall shelf structured like a painting by Mondrian, offering spaces of different sizes: a bridge between art and design. The thickness is so limited that it really seems like a painting. The idea that makes the difference? The four tie-rods that cut horizontally across the shelf, to keep the objects from falling. An intelligent, contemporary solution.

Precisely in the spirit of the collection, as Mette Hay explains: “We didn’t want to limit ourselves to a marketing operation; we wanted to create something that would really be useful, made well, and with style. A quality product, made by IKEA with the recognizable Hay touch.”

Ypperlig: function and minimal, the chairs that play with style

IKEA and Hay join forces for a new collection that is simple, functional and beautiful. The most striking product? The monoblock chair with armrests, according to Rolf Hay
Data Pubblicazione: 3 October 2017

Sharing between companies of experiences and visions is the secret for success in the economy of the future: the “we economy” continues to stimulate partnerships that bring decisive thrust and added value, not only in the digital field. Also in the field of design and furniture alliances mean force, and competitors are becoming “cooperators.” This is happening in northern Europe, where the multinational IKEA has joined forces with a Danish design company, Hay helmed by Mette and Rolf Hay, to create a new collection of dynamic, functional and simple furnishings, perfect for modern spaces, but also perfectly comfortable.

The result of this collaboration is Ypperlig, a collection that includes chairs, tables and softs, complements like mirrors and other objects, created by Mette Hay. The product that emerges as the symbol of the collection, according to the designer Rolf Hay, is the new monoblock chair with armrests, in plastic. Clean, slim, unique lines for a comfortable, light and versatile chair. Perfect for the dining area, especially when it is combined with wooden pieces to create a warm but contemporary setting, the chair is stackable to save space. Thanks to its material and design, the Ypperlig chair is an ideal product for outdoor use as well, even in public spaces. An added value for an original idea.

One of the particular features is the manufacturing process and its timing. Just 30 seconds or so to inject the hot plastic into a mold, and the chair is ready. After removal of leftover bits of the material, in just a few minutes the item can already be used.

This was also a surprise for the Hays, who worked at length in the IKEA production facility, learning a great deal. It is during the production phase that many important decisions are made, with an impact on the design: “We worked a lot, but without conflict, because both Hay and IKEA always start with the production process. It is true, we are designers, but we are also very interested in the way products are made. For designers who want to collaborate with IKEA, I can say it is important to know about industrial production. Because many decisions are made in the factory, so that is where you ought to be.”

The Ypperlig chair has been such a success that it has opened up the possibility of a second, lower and softer version. A useful article to bring harmony and consistency to all the spaces of the home.
