Ypperlig: function and minimal, the chairs that play with style

Sharing between companies of experiences and visions is the secret for success in the economy of the future: the “we economy” continues to stimulate partnerships that bring decisive thrust and added value, not only in the digital field. Also in the field of design and furniture alliances mean force, and competitors are becoming “cooperators.” This is happening in northern Europe, where the multinational IKEA has joined forces with a Danish design company, Hay helmed by Mette and Rolf Hay, to create a new collection of dynamic, functional and simple furnishings, perfect for modern spaces, but also perfectly comfortable.

The result of this collaboration is Ypperlig, a collection that includes chairs, tables and softs, complements like mirrors and other objects, created by Mette Hay. The product that emerges as the symbol of the collection, according to the designer Rolf Hay, is the new monoblock chair with armrests, in plastic. Clean, slim, unique lines for a comfortable, light and versatile chair. Perfect for the dining area, especially when it is combined with wooden pieces to create a warm but contemporary setting, the chair is stackable to save space. Thanks to its material and design, the Ypperlig chair is an ideal product for outdoor use as well, even in public spaces. An added value for an original idea.

One of the particular features is the manufacturing process and its timing. Just 30 seconds or so to inject the hot plastic into a mold, and the chair is ready. After removal of leftover bits of the material, in just a few minutes the item can already be used.

This was also a surprise for the Hays, who worked at length in the IKEA production facility, learning a great deal. It is during the production phase that many important decisions are made, with an impact on the design: “We worked a lot, but without conflict, because both Hay and IKEA always start with the production process. It is true, we are designers, but we are also very interested in the way products are made. For designers who want to collaborate with IKEA, I can say it is important to know about industrial production. Because many decisions are made in the factory, so that is where you ought to be.”

The Ypperlig chair has been such a success that it has opened up the possibility of a second, lower and softer version. A useful article to bring harmony and consistency to all the spaces of the home.

When the world changes our needs change too. Our way of living in the home is transformed, and special collaborations develop to create more fluid solutions, to find the best way to respond to the necessities of the present, combining appealing design and functional quality.

IKEA, a brand that requires no introduction, and Hay, a Danish design company based in Copenhagen that has brought Nordic tastes in furnishings into the world, have joined forces to create Ypperlig, a new collection of articles for decor and everyday use, conceived to be cool, comfortable, durable and smart, with an eye on refined aesthetics. All thanks to essential lines and attention to detail, materials that look to the future and technical innovations that keep objects from aging over time, while responding to the needs of those who live, work and socialize in the home.

On one side, there is the experience of a firm that has worked with the best engineers and developers; on the other, there is that of a company that operates in the world of architecture and fashion, changing our perception of Scandinavian design.

Hay was founded in 2002 by Mette and Rolf Hay, a designer couple with a passion for decor, accessories and fashion, all seen as sources of inspiration. The idea of joining forces to share experiences and projects came from an awareness of affinities and shared objectives: the love of design, the desire to make it functional, working in the direction of simplicity.

One of the must-have items of the Ypperlig collection is the sofa with the same name, a multifunctional style proposal. The concept behind its design was to make a product that would first of all be beautiful, for the heart of the living area, but would also be comfortable for sleeping. How can stable 24-hour comfort be achieved?

By tackling the challenge of interfacing needs, like an interlocking puzzle. The result is a 3-seat sofa with a contemporary minimal style, but also a warm, welcoming personality: the clear geometric lines are softened by the structure in pale wood, and the whole result is inviting, perfectly in tune with the Nordic mood of IKEA.

The trump card is the spring mattress that forms the seat, a guarantee of comfort, day and night. The pillow cover adds a practical plus: it can be completely removed and machine washed, like real bedding. A pillow and a blanket will suffice, and relaxation is ensured, even when the clock says it is time to turn in. Ideal for those who have limited space and lots of friends, for avid readers and people who love functional but also beautiful things.

Interni celebrates the second publishing initiative on Mexico City in October

The second appointment with Ciudad de Mexico/CDMX: the three-year approach to Mexico City World Design Capital 2018 continues (after beginning with the special issue last year) with the monographic issue United Mexican Design, with the special issue of the magazine, in Spanish and English.

The special issue for 2017 will again be introduced by Miguel Ángel Mancera Espinosa, Jefe de Gobierno of the capital, underlining the extreme dynamism of the Mexican territory in terms of design initiatives and hospitality.

The advanced vision of the architectural panorama is described in the reflections of Rojkind Arquitectos on the theme of gathering places; those of Ten Arquitectos on spaces for culture; the research of the studio Legorreta in the field of collective architecture; the focus of Sordo Madaleno Arquitectos on the patterns of facades utilized to define new urban images; and the praise of emptiness and material used in constructive textures, in the contributions of Mauricio Rocha and Gabriela Carrillo; the interpretations of Alberto Kalach regarding harmonious interaction with nature, seen as a living material, the key of psychophysical wellbeing. Along with the focus of Luis Artur Garcia on the symbiotic relationship between architecture and landscape. The Italian spirit in Mexico will be narrated by two works of factory architecture designed by the studio Caruso-Torricella and the exclusive villas on the water of the hotel-resort Mar Adentro in San José del Cabo, in Baja California.

Changing gears, though still in a perspective of grafts between different design cultures, we range from an observatory on the most visionary movements to one on self-production, finding important reference points in the works of Hector Esrawe and Alejandro Castro.

The state of the art of design in Mexico, between essential refinement and abstraction, on the one hand, and expressive verve on the other, is discussed by the curator Ana Elena Mallet, and the designer Laura Noriega in an analysis of the relationship with crafts; while Matteo Ragni and Gonzalez Cabrero investigate a dialectic mentor-student relationship.

The international fair on the supply and production cycle of natural stone

From 27 to 30 September, at Fiera di Verona the 52nd edition of Marmomac, the international fair on the supply and production of natural stone, from raw materials to semi-finished and finished products, machinery, technologies and accessories for working with stone, to the latest applications in architecture and design.

The fair is a fine expression of the unique excellence of Made in Italy. Though Italian stone exports slowed down in 2016 after six consecutive years of growth, the added value of the materials processed by Italian companies reached a historic high.

The same is true of machinery and sector technologies. Marmomac plays a role that is recognized by the Italian government, which since 2015 has inserted the fair in the strategies of the plan for promotion of Made in Italy implemented by MiSE – Ministero per lo Sviluppo Economico and by Ice -Agenzia.

Marmomac has always made internationalism one of its strong points, as demonstrated by the numbers of the 2016 edition, with 64% of the 1670 exhibitors and 60% of the 67,000 visitors hailing from abroad, from over 145 nations. The data for 2017 indicate that there will be a further increase in the number of foreign firms. The international profile of Marmomac grows every year, thanks to a program of initiatives of Veronafiere in North America, North Africa and South America.

The success of Marmomac lies above all in its ability to combine business with the culture of a product that has an age-old tradition in Italy, but also looks to the future. A concept expressed in The Italian Stone Theatre, a pavilion of over 3500 square meters set up in collaboration with MiSE, Ice and Confindustria Marmomacchine, where three exhibitions narrate the interaction between stone, production technologies, experimentation and design, through avant-garde projects by architects and designers. Territorio & Design curated by Raffaello Galiotto and Vincenzo Pavan explores themes connected with stone design, underlining the particular characteristics of the materials of different territories and bringing out the technical content of the cultural tradition. Macchine Virtuose curated by Raffaello Galiotto, for companies in the areas of materials, transformation and technology, focuses on products that reveal workmanship potential in relation to productive and commercial objectives. Soul of City curated by Publicomm and the architecture historian and critic Luca Molinari is a research project on the use of stone reflecting the theme of the UIA Congress 2017 (Seoul, September 2017), involving important architecture firms. The exhibition is flanked by the Forum Area which hosts conferences, lectures and workshops. As happens every year, the Wine Bar offers tastings of the Marmito (a cocktail created in 2016 by the Bartenders Academy of Verona), and the Ristorante d’Autore “Rosso Verona” coordinated by ADI Delegazione Nord Est focuses on Italian food, interpreted by four prize-winning chefs, and Italian wine thanks to the collaboration with the Famiglie dell’Amarone d’Arte and the Consorzio Tutela Radicchio di Verona IGP.

There is also room for the third edition of the International Stone Summit: a worldwide conference on natural stone, with the participation of the leading international marble associations.

After the debut in 2016, there will again be the prize ceremony for the Icon Award, which selects – from the works shown inside ‘The Italian Stone Theatre’ – one that will become the image of the Marmomac 2018 campaign.

For the 6th year, Marmomac & the City brings 12 works and installations in stone to the streets and courtyards of the historical center of Verona, making use of the creations produced by companies for last year’s edition of ‘The Italian Stone Theatre.’

Finally, there is the 11th Best Communicator Award: the Marmomac prize for the quality and originality of the displays of exhibitors.
