MIC – the Museo Internazionale delle Ceramiche of Faenza, exhibits the works of the 130 finalists for the 59th Premio Faenza, one of the most important and oldest international competitions for contemporary art ceramics.
This edition stands out for the participation of outstanding artists who approach ceramic material in keeping with a crafts and design approach that borders on a purely artistic sensibility.
Innovation, combinations of materials and pertinence to contemporary themes are the criteria that guide the jury – composed of Claudia Casali, Director of MIC Faenza, Monika Gass, Director of the Keramikmuseum, Westerwald, Höhr-Grenzhausen, Germany; Grant Gibson, Editor of Crafts Council Magazine, Great Britain; and Daniela Lotta, art and design historian, professor at ISIA Faenza – in the selection of the works for the exhibition and then in the assignment of the prizes.
The exhibition features the works of the finalists, including the winners.
Premio Faenza, for the over 40 section, went to the Italian artist Silvia Celeste Calcagno for the work Interno 8 – La fleur coupée, while the under 40 prize was divided ex aequo between Helene Kirchmair (Austria) for Bobbles, and Thomas Stollar (United States) with 1900 steps #2.
Finally, the Premio Cersaie for design went to the British talent Nicholas Lees for the work Four Leaning Vessels.
