The installation by Lashup Concept Design Studio can be visited until 15 May 2024 at Superattico in Via Eustachi 40, in Milan

What happens when artificial intelligence is put into crisis by a creative process? The Lashup studio has tried to answer this question through a installation, Allucinazione, which can be visited in Milan, at Superattico, in the month of May.

It is an installation made of a seat and paper, this research by the Florentine duo Lashup, but it intends to offer something more. If we use “hallucination” in creative processes in the analog and digital fields, what happens?

What happens if we give false messages to Artificial Intelligence? In the medical field, the term “hallucination” has been widely used to describe states of consciousness in which the individual perceives things that have no objective basis.

At the same time, the concept of hallucination has also been adopted in the computational field, with the use of the term “AI hallucination”: in this usage, we refer to situations in which linguistic models of intelligence artificially generate false information, even though they present it as authentic.

The “AI hallucination state” is a phenomenon that occurs when an exhaustive, effective, logical but completely unfounded answer is provided and therefore the output generated is false.

The hallucination occurs when the system has committed an "error from the human point of view", and singular cases are generated in which it is clear that the chatbot's response is the result of a failure to compromise between the four founding factors: the original request , the combination of sources it draws on, the thematic context and appropriate behavior.

The result of this research, Moments is the Lashup project presented during the recent Milan Design Week last 2023.

Born from a conception process that evokes the hallucinatory state of AI, the object represents a challenge to the very definition of reality, inviting us to explore the boundary between what is real, what is generated from the human mind and what is produced by machines.

The ideation process is based on the inclusion of keywords such as mind, body, narrative, relationship and feeling - the object of the research. Combined with each other, these words generate layouts that do not always have an immediate location in reality, generating an extempore useful for creating an unexpected element, especially if contextualized within the dimension of reality.

The small exhibition presents itself as a means to probe certain states of hallucination - those responses in which artificial intelligence deforms, but at the same time can become a vehicle for stimuli and interpretative visions far from the real context.

This is a stimulus to think about how technology and a creative soul can contribute to generating different visions, new design forms, new linguistic awareness.
