The site-specific Birkenstock Box installation is a temporary extension of the permanent store of Andreas Murkudis, in the Tiergarten district of Berlin, also designed by Gonzalez Haase AAS.
The Box is a sort of urban prosthesis that extends the store into the outer courtyard. Raised from the ground on cork ‘feet,’ the steel container matches the level of the raised entrance of the store.
Customers enter from a platform that usually hosts the shop windows. The Box blocks and reflects the gaze of the viewer, with mirror-finish chrome that dematerializes the container and makes it mingle with its surroundings.
The interior also features cork, the iconic and sustainable ingredient of Birkenstock footwear.
