The most important event in Italy for the contemporary art system has just ended in Turin. The 31st edition of Artissima, with the theme Daydreaming, saw the participation of 189 national and international galleries

We met Luigi Fassi, director of Artissima, in one of the three spaces of the new project WoW-World of Word, the corner “Talking Magazines” created in collaboration with Jaguar which confirms its presence at the event for the 3rd consecutive year.

Here the many voices of the universe of contemporary magazines were welcomed to tell the new communities that animate them and the multiple cultural and artistic dimensions they embrace: founders of the magazines, artists, authors, curators and academics.

WoW-World of Words

“The publishing industry,” underlines Fassi, “is a world that is experiencing a magmatic moment, but magazines remain an essential means of updating and with this space we wanted to tell the story of the health of the sector.”

WoW focused on the current publishing world, increasingly projected towards hybridization, interdisciplinarity and relationships, while underlining the creative power of words and showing how they can not only describe, but also create scenarios that did not exist before.

In addition to the corner dedicated to talks, the project offered Artissima visitors the Edicola, curated by Reading Room, with an exclusive selection of important Italian and international publishing titles that redefine the periodical publishing system and the meaning of printed paper, and the Editorial Area, a nucleus of individual stands and single displays created specifically to offer maximum visibility to the participating magazines and publishers, enhancing their individual specificities.

The Era of Daydreaming

And from the words to the signs, drawings and light of art that illuminated the spaces of the Oval Lingotto in Turin from October 31 to November 3, we offer you here a short journey inside the sections of the fair: the four main ones, Main Section, New Entry, Monologue/Dialogue and Art Space & Edition and the three curated ones, Present Future, Back to the Future and Disegni.

It is the sign of internationality and connections that characterizes Artissima's entry into its fourth decade of activity: the selected galleries, in fact, come from 34 countries around the world and the theme of the 2024 edition has paved the way for a creative journey inviting the public, in an era of limitless connections, to daydream and embark on an exciting journey to discover human creativity.

New Entry and Main Section

Right next to the Talking Magazines corner, the stands of the 15 New Entry galleries were set up, those that have been open for no more than 5 years and are present at the fair for the first time. Among these, the ceramic works of Damien Fragnon, brought from the Nendo gallery in Marseille, works designed to be satisfying not only for human beings, but also for other living beings: they can live immersed in water and become a habitat for marine vegetation.

Main Section instead offers 109 galleries among the most established on the international art scene to offer collectors and the public a consolidated and very high-quality exhibition. Crossing the spaces of Antonia Jannone, Repetto Gallery, Tornabuoni with the works of Alighiero Boetti and Giuseppe Capogrossi, we stopped, also for a tribute to the Piedmontese capital, at Simondi Gallery.

The stand offered, in particular, a small 360° immersion in the work entitled “Orizzonte perduto” by Botto&Bruno, a journey through landscapes created in collage, born from interpretations of classical imaginary landscapes.

Curated Sections

There were three curated sections of the fair - Present Future, Back to the Future and Disegni - present with monographic stands. Present Future has been the section that Artissima dedicates to emerging talents for 24 years. Curated for the first year by Léon Kruijswijk, curator of the KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin, and Joel Valabrega, curator at the Galeria Municipal do Porto in Porto, the section hosts monographic projects with the aim of highlighting the new trends that characterize the international art scene.

This year Present Future proposed the works of 10 artists, presented by 10 galleries, 5 of which are Italian: unpublished projects created specifically for the fair or at their first exhibition in the European and Italian context. Back to the Future is the curated section that includes monographic projects by great pioneers of contemporary art, whose work has played a key role in the history of art. The curatorial team was composed for the first year by Heike Munder, independent curator and writer in Zurich, and Jacopo Crivelli Visconti, director of the Albuquerque Foundation in Sintra.

Among the 10 foreign galleries selected, Rolf Art presented the work of Liliana Maresca, a key figure in the Argentine art scene since the early 1980s, that is, since the first years of Argentine democracy, who has operated through different expressive media: paintings, objects, sculptures, installations, performances.

Disegni, in its 7th edition, is the only fair section in Italy dedicated to this expressive medium. Curated by Irina Zucca Alessandrelli, curator of the Ramo Collection in Milan, the section presents projects conceived as personal exhibitions that enhance the authenticity and autonomy of the work on paper, the power and expressive richness of a medium that is still little known and valued.

Artissima and Jaguar

The galleries present at Artissima offered the fair audience a privileged point of view on contemporary creativity, with a precise cut that derives from the experimental vocation and cutting-edge that has always defined the fair's identity, positioning it uniquely at a European level.

The presence of Jaguar for the third consecutive year, a brand that since 1935 has built a reputation for innovation and creativity, combining visionary design, originality and exclusive aesthetics, celebrated design as an art form and supported an ethic of originality within the theme The Era of Daydreaming.

The collaboration strengthens an increasingly important bond in view of the change that Jaguar is facing and will see the light in the near future, namely the choice to become an exclusively electric brand.

Artissima numbers

Artissima is a market but also the ability to create connections. It is a place where cultural policy relations are created, where “being there” is significant in strategic terms. This is demonstrated by the presence for the first time this year of the stand of the General Directorate for Contemporary Creativity (DGCC) of the Ministry of Culture and of a chain of institutional support in favor of the participation of galleries and artists from countries such as Austria, France, Lithuania and Romania, up to Brazil.

During the four days of opening, from October 31 to November 3, Artissima saw the participation of 34,200 guests, visitors and professionals in the sector. This confirmed the attention and growing trust that private collectors and institutional collectors place in the fair as a primary market reference.

The closing words of the director Luigi Fassi: “We are truly very happy with the result achieved: Artissima was able to bring a message of optimism.

Those who participated in this Art Week left from Turin bringing with them new energy. My deepest thanks go to the gallery owners, to their vision and ability to accompany the artists on the path of growth and research in the world of the market and institutions. The specificity of Turin also had its own large share of credit: the city's museum network has given life to a cultural program of the highest level”.
