Massimiliano & Doriana Fuksas with Jordi Henrich I Monràs have won the international competition for the design of the "Baricentrale" railway areas, held by the City of Bari to promote the transformation of the city, starting with the reorganization of its rail hub, which has generated a break in the urban fabric. The area of intervention measures about 78 hectares, subdivided into 7 parts. The jury’s selection of the winning project was based on the following factors: capacity to coherently respond to the expectations of a city that has long awaited the reconnection of the two sides of the rail line; integration of edification on the two sides through the creation of a large elevated park; introduction of increased building density, in a well-balanced organization of the various parts; solutions that offer a high level of environmental sustainability. The project by Studio Fuksas offers a radical way of soliving the problem of the division of the city of Bari, creating a large urban park with a belvedere promenade overlooking the city and the sea, to function as the connective tissue of the entire project. Without putting the rail line below ground level, the project attempts to revitalize a decayed area, inserting a raised park with a length of three kilometers, including a bicycle path. This large green area will double the amount of greenery per inhabitant, from the present level of 2.7 m2 per person to 5.1 m2.
