For the centennial of his birth, MAXXI produces an exhibition on Bruno Zevi and the modern and contemporary Italian architecture promoted by his work
History and counter-history of Italian architecture 1944-2000
MAXXI – National Museum of the Arts of the XXI century
Rome, 25 April – 16 September 2018
For the centennial of his birth, MAXXI presents an exhibition on the teacher, historian, critic, politician and designer Bruno Zevi, focusing on the modern and contemporary Italian architecture he promoted in his work.
Zevi’s architects: History and counter-history of Italian architecture 1944-2000 features materials from the archives of the museum, Fondazione Zevi and many national institutions, and sets out to rediscover certain figures on the Italian scene that have remained in the background. The show clarifies the fundamental role played by Bruno Zevi in the national debate on architecture in the postwar era.
Maurizio Sacripanti, Luigi Pellegrin, Franco Albini, Giovanni Michelucci, Mario Ridoldi, Carlo Mollino are just some of the 35 architects on which the exhibition curated by Pippo Ciorra and Jean-Louis Cohen focuses. Their projects were published and supported by Zevi, across over 50 years of critical activism.
The documentation examines the bridge on the Basento River in Potenza built from 1967 to 1976 by Sergio Musmeci, the Venezuela Pavilion at the Giardini della Biennale in Venice from 1953 by Carlo Scarpa, the multifunctional building on Via Campania in Rome by Lucio Passarelli (1961-1964), the immense volumes of the Burgo paper mill in Mantua designed by Pier Luigi Nervi (1961-1964), and the Monument to the Martyrs of the Fosse Ardeatine by Mario Fiorentino built in 1946-49.
