In Piacenza, 2017 will be remembered as the year of Guercino. The 17th-century artist from Emilia (Cento, Ferrara, 1591 – Bologna, 1666) will be honored with a series of remarkable initiatives, that combine the cathedral and Palazzo Farnese in a single itinerary.
The fulcrum is the cathedral whose dome contains the extraordinary cycle of frescoes made by Guercino from 1626 to 1627, enhanced by new lighting created by Davide Groppi.
For the first time it will be possible to go up into the dome to admire the frescoes from a closer vantage point.
The visit begins with a multimedia room that offers an innovative exegesis of the masterpiece by Guercino, including an immersive experience using 3D visors. At the same time, the Ducal Chapel of Palazzo Farnese will present an exhibition curated by Daniele Benati and Antonella Gigli, together with a committee of experts composed of Antonio Paolucci, Fausto Gozzi and David Stone, with a selection of 20 masterpieces by Guercino.
On Wednesday 22 and Thursday 23 March the Civic Museums of Palazzo Farnese host a conference on the great painter.
