Interior architecture, industrial design and photography at the Design Parade 2023 in the South of France (and what remains to be seen for design lovers this summer on the French Riviera)

Summer 2023 under the banner of art and design on the Côte d'Azur with the Design Parade Hyères International Design Festival and Design Parade ToulonInternational Architecture Festival of Interiors, now in their 17th and 7th edition respectively, showcase for the new generation of design talents, this year with Chanel as main sponsor of the event.

The two festivals have as a corollary a series of events, conferences, awards and exhibitions.

Ten finalists for the two categories, chosen by the juries chaired (for Hyères) by the French designer Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance (in Toulon) by the architect of Lebanese origin Aline Asmar d'Amman (his are the new interiors of the Parisian Hôtel de Crillon created in collaboration with Karl Lagerfeld and the restaurant Le Jules Verne on the Eiffel Tower).

This year we also celebrate the 100th anniversary of Villa Noailles, the residence designed by the French architect Robert Mallet-Stevens, today a reference art center presided over by Pascale Mussard and directed by Jean-Pierre Blanc.

As per tradition, the two main installations are those of the presidents of the juries. In Hyères, Made in Situ by Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance with which he presents his artisanal and geographical research on sustainable local materials in five collections - cork, ceramic, bronze, clay and bark.

In Toulon, Aline Asmar d'Amman brought the intense L'Amour, la Mer, les Femmes expression of feminine culture and sentiment. On the ground floor of the Ancien Évêché a tribute to Karl Lagerfeld with his collection of marble furnishings.

For the 2023 edition of the Design Parade Hyères, the Tectona award is added. The ten candidate designers will have to try their hand at the project for a stackable dining chair on the theme of A break in the sun, to be seen until 3 September 2023.

The Hyères awards

In Hyères, the designer and artist based between La Réunion and Holland, Yassine Ben Abdallah with his Mémoires de Plantation won both the Le Grand prix du jury Design Parade Hyères that the prize of the always very attentive public, in fact the double prize combination often occurs.

Two awards also to the couple Lucien Dumase and Lou-Poko Savadogo, who with their Au Dixième furniture collection won the Carmignac Foundation endowment and the new Tectona award.

The winners in Toulon

In Toulon the projects are almost all aligned on the climate and valorisation of the territory. The main prize, Le Grand prix Design Parade Toulon Van Cleef & Arpels went to Clément Rosenberg with his textile Chambre Tapissée Pour Cigale en Hiver.

Arthur Ristor and Anaïs Hervé won the Chanel Visual Merchandising award with their Palais de Sable.

The Mobilier National award went to the couple Emily Chakhtakhtinsky & Marisol Santana with the Lou Cabanoun project, while the public preferred the duo Théophile Chatelais & Hadrien Krief with their composition Les Heures Chaudes.

The jury's special mention went to L'Oseraie by Mathieu Tran Nguyen.

Summer 2023 exhibitions on the French Riviera

The interior designer Pierre Yovanovitch takes possession of the rooms of the villa in a scenographic homage to the daily life of Charles and Marie-Laure de Noailles, a visionary couple of patrons and supporters of the likes of Cocteau, Dalí, Ernst and picasso. His Les Nuits d'Été can be visited until January 14, 2024.

Andrée Putman, who was godmother of the very first Design Parade Hyères in 2006, is celebrated with the exhibition Andrée Putman et les créateurs du Mouvement Moderne, until 31 October 2023 at the Fondation CAB in Saint Paul de Vence.

The city of Toulon is invaded by interior photos by French photographer Dominique Nabokov, images taken for the publication Apartamento. In the city centre, Ronan Bouroullec with Le Mains à l'Argille is exhibiting his forays into the world of ceramics, to be seen until November 5th.

The Center Pompidou exhibition, Seconde Nature, at the Hôtel des Arts de Toulon - Exposition pour un design durable, brings together a selection of extraordinary pieces by fifty international creatives such as Enzo Mari, the Campana Brothers, Maarten Baas, Mathieu Lehanneur to deal with the themes of renewal, ecology, design circular. Until November 5th.
