Vitra Design Museum presents a narrative on light: from the invention of the light bulb to new technologies. No other invention has revolutionized environmental space in the last century like that of electric lighting. Thanks to new technologies, today radical change is taking place in the world of artificial light. And it is precisely this development that VDM addresses in the exhibition Lightopia, the first show on the theme of the design of light seen through examples of art, design, architecture and many other disciplines. About 300 works, of which many are icons from the lighting collection of VDM never shown in public, like those by Wilhelm Wagenfeld, Achille Castiglioni, Gino Sarfatti and Ingo Maurer. Certain pieces visualize the performing energy of light. At the center of the show, visitors will see the works of contemporary designers and artists like Olafur Eliasson, Troika, Chris Fraser, Front Design, Daan Roosegaarde, Joris Laarman, realities:united and mischer'traxler that explore new creative possibilities through light. The interactive works also include installations through which to walk, permitting visitors to explore the basic force of light. The dialogue of the works on display offers a panoramic overview of light design, from the start of the industrial society to the visions that characterize our future.
