In the broad cultural offering of Hall 10, the event curated by Giuseppe Fallacara reflects on possible developments in the sector and the relationship between craftsmanship and technology

As part of the busy programme of cultural initiatives that once again this year will enrich Marmomac - at Veronafiere 24-27 September - there is once again the appointment with Marmomac Meets Academies, an event that focuses on the theme of stone design of the future, focusing in particular on the close relationship between theory and practice and craftsmanship and advanced technology. Concepts that will be declined in the exhibition Ceci n'est pas un fossile, curated by Giuseppe Fallacara: an innovative set-up that will stage a hypothetical design ‘workshop’ of the future, within which computational design coexists with digital fabrication and manual skill with all its related technical tools.

Fossil inspiration

The shape of this workshop of the future - located inside Pavilion 10, known as The Plus Theatre and whose concept is signed by Giorgio Canale - is inspired by the lithic world and in particular by the fossil shells contained in sedimentary stones, which, when cut, display their unmistakable logarithmic spiral shape. This spiral geometry connotes, from a planimetric point of view, the appearance of the workshop, as if to plastically symbolise an immersion in the lithic world, made up of discoveries and possible innovations. An ideal bridge between a past of millions of years and a near future.

The curator's word

‘The idea of the spiral,‘ explains Fallacara, “stems from a morphological and conceptual similarity between Magritte's famous 'pipe’ and the fossil in the installation, both of which are characterised by a curvilinear/spiral shape that metaphorically refers to something other than its own essence. The meaning of this year's installation is thus concealed in the contrast between representation and reality: a fossil is by no means an immobile element in an inert matter as it might seem, but on the contrary stands as the guardian of life to generate action and creation.

International creativity

While Fallacara will be the focal point of the exhibition space, constructively translated into a large origami subdivided into a myriad of precious triangular fragments, the real protagonists of ‘Marmomac Meets Academies’ 2024 will be the young creatives from schools of Architecture, Industrial Design, Academies of Fine Arts and Engineering from universities in numerous countries, including Italy, France, Portugal, New Zealand, Argentina and the USA. Besides being called upon to physically realise the space in collaboration with companies in the sector, the students will have the task of animating the pavilion during the event.

From idea to prototype

In the forthcoming workshop, it will be possible to discuss the different stages of the design process with the young protagonists: from the birth of the idea to its prototype realisation by means of the various innovative technologies on display (CAD modellers, 3D printers, oculus rift, hololens, etc.). Divided into functional areas - design, 3D printing and prototype exhibition - the workshop, animated by daily events, will indicate a possible operational perspective towards which to lead the complex universe of stone design in the future.

The importance of training

‘Marmomac Meets Academies’ is just one of the many initiatives in the extensive training programme offered by Marmomac and aimed at professionals, architects, designers and students that will take place during the exhibition in two dedicated areas, one in Hall 10 and one in Hall 1. The full programme includes courses organised by the Marmomac Academy and accredited by the professional associations of architects in Italy, the United Kingdom (RIBA) and the United States (AIA) as well as talks and meetings with architecture and design case studies, as well as award ceremonies and in-depth studies according to a programme offering training credits. Meetings with the authors of the cultural projects on show in the pavilion will also take place in ‘The Plus Theatre’, where ‘Marmomac Meets Academies’ represents the link between the academic/educational world and that of companies.
