Fondazione Berengo at Palazzo Franchetti hosts an exhibition on the design works of Memphis

Palazzo Franchetti

San Marco 2847, Venice

24 May – 25 November 2018

At Palazzo Franchetti, Fondazione Berengo hosts an exhibition of the design works of Memphis during the 16th Biennale Architettura.

Just as the protagonists of the Memphis group challenged minimalist fashions back in the 1980s with their iconoclastic, colorful design with clear references to Pop Art, now their objects form a contrast with the historic backdrop of Palazzo Franchetti.

The setting for the show is an underbrush of black plants created to overshadow any hues in the context and to focus attention on the daring range of colors and forms that allowed Ettore Sottsass and the co-founders of the group to have an indelible influence on worldwide design.

The intrinsic irreverence of Memphis also shines through in the structure of the exhibition, done by IB Studio, which reshapes the layout of Palazzo Franchetti thanks to the geometric skeleton of Carlton, the iconic shelving unit from 1981 by Sottsass.

The curators of the event are Jean Blanchaert and Adriano Berengo.

Gilded Cage, a gold cage with a height of over seven meters by the Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, stands out in the courtyard of Palazzo Franchetti.
