From 14 to 16 April in Milan 2023 miart returns, the international modern and contemporary art fair now in its twenty-seventh edition. Information, news and events not to be missed (including Milan Art Week)

In Milan, miart is the annual appointment with modern and contemporary art which for the past twenty-seven editions has been a point of reference for collectors and enthusiasts.

With Nicola Ricciardi at the helm for the third time, miart 2023 promises to be even more participatory, international and integrated. Alongside the events at the fair, the network of programming in the city also returns: Milan Art Week, from 11 to 16 April.

Miart 2023: The theme

Crescendo is the key term of the 2023 edition of miart. A central word for the whole event, from both a conceptual and concrete and organizational point of view.

Crescendo in fact refers both to the increase in participation observed in the last two years of the fair, and to the increasingly intense commitment to biodiversity for its protection and development. In particular, the ever-growing attention to the care of the environment and its resources in reference to the role played by miart in the Gallery Climate Coalition Italia and its ever-growing commitment to promoting more sustainable and with less environmental impact.

Crescendo will therefore be the narrative device to tell the works of some of the artists who will be able to meet in April among the stands of miart 2023.

The numbers: what to expect from Miart 2023

In numerical terms, the expected presence in 2023 is 169 galleries (a double-digit increase compared to 2022), coming from 27 countries around the world, which will participate with works of modern masters, both established and emerging contemporary artists.

Also attracting attention is the return of international participation which has dropped considerably in recent editions and which refers the memory to the last miart 'open to the world', that of 2019: this year almost 40% of exhibitors has an office abroad, while the galleries involved come from four continents and distant cities, such as Sao Paulo for HOA Galeria and Shanghai for Capsule Shanghai, Seoul for Foundry Seoul and Accra (Ghana) for Gallery 1957.

What to see at Miart 2023

Also for the 2023 edition, the international modern and contemporary art fair confirms the organization in three sections: Emergent, the section curated by Attilia Fattori Franchini dedicated to 26 young galleries; Established, the main section that houses 133 galleries exhibiting works of the strictest contemporary age together with those dedicated to 20th century art, not forgetting those active in the collectible and copyright design sector; Decades, the section curated by Alberto Salvadori that explores the history of the last century through 10 monographic projects from the 1910s to the 2010s.

Milan Art Week

As every year, miart 2023 is flanked by Milan Art Week, an artery of the fair  that brings a week of widespread event to the city coordinated by the Assessorato to the Culture of the Municipality of Milan which puts the main public institutions and private foundations of the city that deal with modern and contemporary art online, with a dedicated program of exhibitions and activities.

On the occasion of Milan Art Week, some exhibitions of the season will open, such as Candice Lin | Arnaldo Pomodoro Foundation Award at the GAM; Ann Veronica Janssens at Pirelli HangarBicocca; the exhibition project How you dare at the Fabbrica del Vapore; the Forum 900 project at the Museo del Novecento, which will see the gallery on the ground floor host works of contemporary art and transform itself into a place for discussion, debate and presentations; two exhibitions, dedicated to Danilo Sciorilli and Aldo Spoldi, at the Stelline Foundation; the exhibition on Dara Birnbaum at the Prada Foundation Observatory and the artist Nathlie Provosty at the ICA Foundation.

Guided tours, special projects and extraordinary openings in many exhibition spaces, from the PAC to the Castello Sforzesco, from Palazzo Reale to the Museum of Science and Technology up to the Triennale Milano, and in the venues of the exhibitions already scheduled. There will be, as in past editions, initiatives dedicated to public art, including the inauguration of new works by ArtLine, the site-specific contemporary art itinerary that winds through the Citylife park.
