Once again this year Samsung Electronics Italialaunches a challenge for talented young designers. The competition, supported by ADI – the Italian Association for Industrial Design – is for students in design programs in Italy (university or post-grad level) and for sector professionals no more than 30 years of age. Electronics for Urban Mobility: this is the theme of the sixth edition. Participants have to come to terms with the issues of electronics applied to everyday life in the urban environment, creating new products, services, systems and digital applications to improve life in the city and to encourage low environmental impact. This year the Samsung Young Design Award will take place in just two phases. The first phase, completed on 15 May, calls for young designers to register individually or in a group at the website www.samsungyoungdesignaward.comand to send their digital concept. The jury then convenes, and by 1 June selects the 15 best projects. In the second phase the creators of the 15 selected works get the chance to develop their ideas under the guidance of 3 tutors – the young but already successful designers Ilaria Marelli, Fabio Di Liberto and Matteo Ragni. From 1 to 15 June there will be an intensive workshop at Samsung Design Milano where the finalists and tutors meet to work together, following the indications of the jury. The second phase ends with delivery of the definitive projects, on 14 September, and live presentation of the works for the jury, which will then select the winners. Finally, the announcement of the winners happens in November. Once again this year there will be three prizes: the Gold Prize of 5000 euros, the Silver Prize of 3000, and the Bronze Prize of 2000 euros, augmented by the prestigious Grand Prize of the Jury, which offers 15,000 euros and a three-month internship at the Samsung Design Center in Milan, for the most innovative, exceptional project. The jury is composed of nine design protagonists, including two ADI representatives, the designers James Irvine, Stefano Giovannoni and Aldo Cibic, the professors Alfredo Ronchi and Lorenzo Ardizio, the journalist Carlo Antonelli and Kyung Hoon Lee, director of Samsung Design Milano. www.samsungyoungdesignaward.com.
