Biennale Architettura 2023: who is the curator and what is the theme?

The curator of 18. Mostra Internazionale di Architettura is Lesley Lokko, a Ghanaian/Scottish architect, professor of architecture and writer, former member of the International Jury of the 17th Architecture Biennale.

The theme is The Laboratory of the Future and will have Africa at its center even if, Lokko explains, it will not be an exhibition on Africa. As the youngest continent on the planet and also the one with the highest rate of urbanization, Africa will serve as a laboratory model from which to build the future.

What's the best way to visit the 2023 Architecture Biennale in Venice?

Like every Biennale, the Architecture Biennale also consists of:

  • a major authorial exhibition, which recounts a curatorial thesis (which gives the Biennale its title) through selected projects
  • national presences (the Pavilions), which interpret the curatorial thesis with the best of what each single country is capable of producing

The authorial section can be visited in the Central Pavilion of the Gardens and continues in the Corderie of the Arsenale.

The national pavilions are instead located in the remaining parts of the Giardini and the Arsenale.

The advice is to take at least two days for the visit and to start with the Central Pavilion of the Giardini and then continue to the Arsenale (first day); then moving on to the National Pavilions (second day).

Italian Pavilion at the 2023 Biennale: who are the curators, what is the theme?

The Italian Pavilion at the 2023 Architecture Biennale, promoted by the General Directorate for Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture, will be curated by the Fosbury Architecture collective, formed by Giacomo Ardesio, Alessandro Bonizzoni, Nicola Campri, Veronica Caprino, Claudia Mainardi.

The title is SPATIAL: Everyone belongs to everyone else and will be divided into two successive moments.

The first begins before the start of the Biennale (from January to April) and will see the activation of 9 site-specific interventions in various places throughout Italy. The second will be the Italian Pavilion which will tell a formal and theoretical synthesis of the processes triggered in the 9 territories in the previous months. The aim? To restore a different and original image of Italian architecture in the international context.

To follow the work in progress there will be a website and an Instagram account, which will be launched in January 2023.

While to get details on the project for the Italian Pavilion at the 2023 Architecture Biennale, we will have to wait for the dedicated press conference scheduled for February-March 2023.
