Covering the facades of buildings with an innovative personalized and tailor-made service: a reality that is possible today
AGC Glass Europe, European leader in the production of flat glass, has created “Coating on Demand”: an innovative personalized service that allows you to create custom-made coated glass. In fact, thanks to virtual prototyping software, AGC is able to simulate the project and customize a real sample of the product. Among the projects completed through this extraordinary service, the glass façade of theSt. Regis Chicago, a three-tower building, designed by Studio Gang.
Juliane Wolf, Design Director and Partner at Studio Gang, says: “Working on the St. Regis Chicago, we initially thought we could create thecolor gradient façade with the products glass already on the market. But no one has been able to produce the desired effect using the available colors.
We found that the complexity of variables in the manufacturing processes prohibited a consistent color variation across the six types of glass needed for the different sized tops. We were aware of AGC's Coating on Demand (COD) technology, and we discovered that it could actually be developed step by step quite easily depending on the size of the tower.” In just three days the customized palette for the St. Regis was created, obtaining the six different types of glass capable of satisfying design needs. And when observed from a distance, the tower seems to sway: an effect obtained with flat glass panels that protrude outward or retract by approximately 13 cm for each floor, an expedient that helps to reflect the hues of the sky without using highly reflective glass.
Opening St. Regis Chicago, with its 3 towers, is the third tallest building in the city: it houses residential units, a 5-star hotel and several restaurants. To create its glass façade, AGC's innovative Coating on Demand was used: a personalized service that allows you to create custom-made coated glass. In fact, thanks to virtual prototyping software, AGC is able to simulate the project and tailor-made a real sample of the product.
