Borea, designed by Piero Lissoni: for a captivating, eclectic and sustainable outdoor

Borea is a complete and eclectic collection of chairs, tables and outdoor tables designed by Piero Lissoni for B&B Italia. The pieces that compose it are united by tubular metal structures with a fluid and continuous design, without joints and interruptions, captivating and even surprising in the terminal part that rests on the ground. The metal bending and bending processes take up techniques used in the aeronautical sector and transport them to the world of outdoor furniture, creating a collection with an unmistakable stylistic signature. With Borea, the company continues in its commitment to developing projects that are increasingly in the name of sustainability, which take into account the entire life cycle of the product which begins with the designer's idea, passes through the choice of materials and production, to get to the experience of those who use it. In fact, Borea presents itself as an eco-design collection with exceptional contents in terms of design, comfort, durability and circularity. It uses recycled and recyclable materials, as well as entirely separable so that, at the end of its life cycle, every single element can be recovered or disposed of following the path most suitable for each material.

At a glance

What is it?
It is a collection of sofas, armchairs, chairs, tables and outdoor coffee tables that stand out for their design studied in detail, comfort, exceptional durability and attention to sustainability.
What is the design concept?
The starting point of the project is precisely the theme of sustainability. We started from here to create an eco-design collection that uses recycled and recyclable materials as well as entirely separable so that, at the end of the life cycle, from a circular point of view, every single element can be recovered or disposed of according to the single material .
How is it made and from what materials?
The seats have tubular aluminum structures, so light that they can be stacked, and padding in polyester fiber obtained from the recycling of PET plastic bottles. The same fiber is also used for the waterproof canvas that covers them, as well as for the yarn used for the seams and zippers. The seat cushion is then completed by a differentiated density polyurethane insert which has the purpose of increasing its bearing capacity. The tables have steel structures and tops in enamelled lava stone. The glazing process uses a special “ecoglass recycled” material obtained from the crushing and grinding of the glass of disused monitors and PCs.
What makes it special?
Attention to the entire life cycle of the product and the search for increasingly environmentally friendly solutions guided the entire project. For example, the choice of making the fillings in polyester fiber from recycled Pet. A fiber with exceptional characteristics of softness, elasticity and durability, entirely sustainable and circular as it is 100% recycled and 100% recyclable. Or aluminum for the structures: a light, extremely resistant and durable material as well as entirely and easily recyclable, therefore reusable indefinitely to give life to new products every time.
How is it?
Light, eclectic and sustainable.
In the designer’s own words
Borea is an airplane. It is an airplane that has landed, an airplane of 2020 but with a technological soul that perhaps comes from another century. It is an aluminum collection, very modern, stackable, a real outdoor product that you can leave in the rain and nothing happens, but above all it has this aspect: it looks like an airplane! It gives you the idea of these timeless furniture that the tradition of the 20th century has moved into the new century.
