Winning ideas, innovation, creativity and unconventional freedom of expression

Over 100 competing projects and five evaluated categories that tell the next ways of living and contemporary living: travelling, living, working, leisure, music (instruments). These are just some of the numbers representing the 2022 edition of the Rodolfo Bonetto Targa Award promoted with the contribution of the Lombardy Region. Aimed at students from Universities and Design Schools, the initiative encourages the unconventional expressive freedom that has always distinguished Bonetto's work, rewarding original projects and concepts for their intended use and placing no limits on the design language itself.

Enhancing artistic genius

"A project that responds to the objectives set by the regional call for proposals 'Demo': to stimulate initiatives capable of exalting the artistic genius typical of our designers. We are in fact talking about one of the most dynamic and important competitive sectors in Lombardy's economic fabric. Our goal must be to foster the imagination and creativity of our young designers, the future ambassadors of 'Made in Italy' worldwide. Always an expression of the concept of 'beauty', Italian craftsmanship is perfectly matched to the innovation and excellence of design proposals, a distinctive trait of the Bel Paese in the international arena. Product quality, imagination and creative talent: this is how we can be winners. In this sense, the Lombardy Region supports projects and designers that give lustre to our creations,' explains Lara Magoni, Lombardy Region Councillor for Tourism, Territorial Marketing and Fashion.

A privileged stage

"The award is intended to be a privileged stage where young designers can showcase their creative and design skills. The advancement of technological innovation cannot be separated from design, understood as an element of synthesis between man and instrument,' says Marco Bonetto, president of the jury. "This was the founding thought behind my father's entire work, which I am proud to commemorate with an award that has reached its 25th edition this year'.

Experimentation and diversity rewarded

Alongside President Marco Bonetto and Vice-President, writer Decio Carugati, the jury for this edition (Mauro Afro Borella / Architect - Lecturer; Aldo Castellano / University Lecturer; Luciano Galimberti / President ADI and Architect; Flavio Manzoni / Chief Design Officer Ferrari; Giovanna Mazzocchi / President Editoriale Domus) was composed of prominent personalities from different cultural and professional backgrounds, guaranteeing a neutral choice, free from any stylistic influence. The only criterion was to reward experimentation, diversity, referring to the principles of inclusive and promoting Universal Design.

Swarmix wins to protect bees

First prize goes to the project Swarmix, curated by Edoardo Amato, Enrico Canella and Giacomo Pizzoni / IED Milan. The idea revolves around an imminent need for the future of the planet and the next generations: the safeguard of bees and their repopulation, the urgency of an active involvement of people in supporting beekeepers. Swarmix is a system that connects a special bee hive built of natural materials, users and the beekeepers themselves. By downloading the app and subscribing, through sensors and cameras integrated into the hive it will be possible to monitor insect health 24 hours a day.

Pastago, a portable ally in the kitchen

Developed by Sofia Luppi Areosa, Gianluca Pegolo and Lorenzo Taccetta of the Milan Polytechnic, Pastago (runner-up) is a small household appliance that can automatically prepare different types of pasta made with different flours. A portable ally for those seeking a healthy lifestyle or who need to meet special needs dictated by food intolerances, or simply for those who want to experiment in the kitchen.

Iedex: the cycling tourism of the future

It is a leasing service offering a tourist exploration experience on board an IED-branded electric bike to rediscover little-known places or attractions in the Milanese hinterland, the project (third runner-up) curated by Alessandro Ingravalle / IED Milano. Through the Iedexapp it is possible to plan the desired experience. Two itinerary configurations are available: Urban within the city, and Rural outside the boundaries of Milan, which can also include an overnight stay in a campsite. The bike is equipped with a navigator built into the handlebars that will alert the user in case of proximity to Must See, possible suggested detours to discover unexpected attractions.

Quantum ergo six: redesigning cross-country ski poles

Special Mention to the project curated by Alessandro Boscariol / ISIA Roma Design (Pordenone branch), which deals with a complete redesign of classic cross-country skiing rackets, so that they can be completely disassembled. Modifications that would allow a single component to be replaced in the event of a racquet breakage, as well as allowing the tool to be used for other outdoor activities, such as trekking, Nordic walking or rollerskiing.

Jellyfish & Claw

Targa della Critica to the project by Simone Scuteri / Isia Pescara, two pieces of cutlery designed for a new gestuality in the consumption of food at the table, allowing finger food and street food to be comfortably grasped without getting fingers dirty or to be served from the serving dish, avoiding having to put one's hands in the dish itself. Inspired by the chopstick gestures of oriental culinary culture, they make elegant gestures that are considered informal and avoid bringing the hands too close to the mouth. Jellyfish is made of Mater-Bi, a biodegradable bioplastic; Claw is made of 18/10 stainless steel and can also be used in professional contexts.

A prize-winner

The Targa D'Onore was awarded to Luciano Galimberti, President of ADI and member of the jury. A thank you from the entire Italian design community for his dedication and determination. His skills and passion have ensured that since 2014, the year his presidency began, ADI and the ADI Design Museum have become a solid institutional reality, the reference point for made-in-Italy design in the world.
