Pop-Up is the trolley for the contemporary traveller: colourful, designer, sustainable, agile and lightweight

It's easy to say trolley. What requirements must our future travelling companion fulfil when purchasing it? Does it only have to be robust (to withstand shocks and abrasions during transport by car, train, plane) and durable (e.g. weatherproof)? Or should it stand out for its sophisticated design (designed with an attractive and trendy look, in addition to the basic functionality of protecting and transporting personal belongings)? Maybe even be smart (offering functions such as automatic weighing, digital lock, GPS tracking), sustainable (made from environmentally friendly and durable materials with low impact on natural resources and the environment during production, use and disposal) or customisable (tailored to one's needs and reflecting personal style and preferences)? As is often the case, the truth lies in a synthesis of all demands: offering protection, the right capacity, durability, comfort, agility, lightness.

Innovative solutions

Chiara Caramelli, designer and founder of the Zoom Bags brand, has sought to provide answers and solutions to these questions. By creating travel items designed for the contemporary traveller: sustainable in terms of materials (recycled and environmentally friendly), customisable in terms of style (with attention to detail and exclusive design), and innovative in terms of solutions (such as reducing clutter when stored after use).

Sustainable design

Selected by the ADI Design Index 2022 for the international Compasso d’Oro 2024 award, Pop-Up (55X40X20 cm x 2.7 kg x 30 litres) is the trolley designed by Chiara Caramelli and produced in Italy with recycled materials: two-wheeled cabin size, light, resistant, customisable in colour, design. The EVA rubber (Ethylene Vinyl Acetate, a soft, closed-cell foam rubber used to make flexible and elastic products, waterproof and non-toxic) of the shells is composed of more than 60% recycled material from shoe sole processing waste. The material is certified and produced in Italy in ten different colours. The inner lining is made of 100% recycled polyester from the recovery of plastic bottles and industrial waste, and is removable and washable in water for better maintenance.

A decisive choice

"Our choice of sustainability also includes the recovery of surplus fabric production for the linings and the reduction of the trolley's footprint by up to 50 per cent by completely dividing the two shells, which can be stored inside each other so as not to take up household space," explains the designer. The wheels can be replaced in case of wear and tear or damage to extend the product's life cycle. In the event of an accidental fall, Pop-Up bounces rather than breaking, thanks to the impact-resistant recycled EVA rubber shells.

Colour, colour, colour

Designed in collaboration with Eliana Lorena, the colour design is inspired by a journey through Italy from north to south: from Dolomites White to Stromboli Black, passing through Tuscany Green, Maremma Yellow, Sardinia Turquoise, Pompeii Red, to Sicily Orange.
