All products from the world's largest logistics hub for leather in stock are carbon-neutral, with no impact on global warming

Gruppo Mastrotto, one of the world's leading tanning industries based in Arzignano in the province of Vicenza, Italy, has succeeded in zeroing, with regard to the products offered by its Gruppo Mastrotto Express prompt delivery leather service (more than 1,500 colours, 40 collections, order fulfilment in 48 hours), the emissions defined as Scope 1 coming from assets owned by the company or that the company operationally controls, and Scope 2, which include indirect emissions from energy used.

Carbon Neutral Products

"This new milestone represents a fundamental step in our Sustainability Journey," comments Chiara Mastrotto, Group President, "a real journey towards sustainability that we have been undertaking for many years now and in which we have also wanted and want to continue to involve our customers. This result, which is the result of commitment, great teamwork and significant investments, is a further stimulus for us to continue with determination on this journey towards sustainability. Our Sustainability Journey does not stop here'.

Ready for zero impact delivery

Leather, already a sustainable material in itself as it is the result of the use of food industry waste and a concrete example of circular economy, thanks to Gruppo Mastrotto Express is not only available for prompt delivery even in small quantities, but can be said to be truly carbon neutral. But how is it possible to certify the Carbon Neutrality of a product and what was the path that could lead to this extraordinary result?

In small steps...

First, a series of initiatives were undertaken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions starting with the optimisation and efficiency of the production process: from the use of solar panels to lower water consumption, from the reduction in the use of chemicals to the introduction of continuous improvement methods in production. Subsequently, the company decided to purchase only electricity from certified renewable sources.

...towards a great result

A subsequent analysis of the company's emissions showed how the measures implemented, although bringing significant environmental benefits, still did not allow to zero the potential effects on global warming, deriving from production processes and energy use. In order to reduce them to zero, Gruppo Mastrotto has joined a number of United Nations offsetting projects, which make it possible to cope with the climate emergency by supporting green initiatives. The offsetting of emissions takes place in accordance with the Kyoto Protocol, which allows companies to offset their emissions by supporting sustainable development projects carried out in countries with emerging or developing economies.

The chosen projects

Three projects have been chosen by Gruppo Mastrotto for this purpose. They are located in India and Brazil and consist of electricity production from renewable sources (wind and hydroelectric) and biomass cogeneration (recovery of husk, a by-product of rice processing). Besides the obvious environmental benefits, these projects also have positive economic, social, cultural and technological spin-offs.
