The imaginative language of Elena Salmistraro is inspired by Gianni Rodari: Axo is born, a rag doll, a symbol of socio-cultural regeneration

“A child will find the strength and courage to fight to build a better world only if he is able to imagine things that do not exist”, said Gianni Rodari. And it is to this thought teach adults and children to observe/transform the world through the evocative/creative power of fairy tales that Cappellini and Elena Salmistraro were inspired to conceive a new chapter of the story started in April with Amor Fati, the installation that contaminated the showroom in via Santa Cecilia during the Interni Design Week 2021. At the center of the new project a funny doll / salamander of piece made with the fabrics of the various Cappellini collections re-assembled and re-generated.

The creative partnership between the company famous for its products with minimal lines and the eclectic, imaginative and imaginative artist and designer is therefore reconfirmed. For this special edition strongly desired of Milan Design Week, Axo is born, a nice salamander in the piece, changeable in appearance and with an extraordinary ability, that of regenerating itself.

Axo in Fabula is thus staged in the Cappellini showroom in via Santa Cecilia, a project that investigates the theme of socio-cultural regeneration through the fantastic, sunny and surreal language of Elena Salmistraro.

Axo is a rag doll, the first of the Christmas Dolls that, year after year, Cappellini will put on sale. A doll like those of the past, sewn by grandmothers reusing, reassembling and regenerating bachelors of fabric, to create unique pieces. From a gesture as simple as it is full of meanings, unrepeatable works were born that through the eyes and the games of children became the protagonists of imaginative worlds fairytale, in fact.

As then, the rag doll preserves a message of environmental sustainability that today is also enriched with a social value. Axo was in fact born from the collaboration with the Cooperativa Alice, promoter of Ethically made in Italy, the first Italian supply chain guaranteed by WFTO (World Fair Trade Organization) which works for an inclusive society, to restore centrality to the person and encourage sustainable development through craftsmanship, together with Il Laboratorio based in Quarto Oggiaro and Fiori All'Occhiello di Baranzate.

Axo in Fabula is the result of a much-felt choral project, which highlights the issue of the impact of the textile industry on the environment, but also the centrality of reintegrating women and the most fragile categories in society, to offer them a new life opportunity: a rebirth.

An installation of abstract works defines the path within the space by telling the genesis of the project and illustrating the concept of change and regeneration. A journey through sculptures, also made of fabric, which immortalize the moments of Axo's growth: from birth to transformation, from her being tissue-cell to becoming a black dream doll.

The exhibition / exploratory / regenerative path continues in the showroom between re-editions of cult pieces and new proposals. Among the big names returns that of Jasper Morrison, discovered and launched by Giulio Cappellini over thirty years ago. Among the furnishings chosen, the remake of the elegant Day Bed, the first product presented by the English designer for Cappellini together with the famous Thinkingman's chair, reinterpreted for the occasion in light gray velvet and black nylon.
