Author and collectible design, high craftsmanship, experiments between art and design, eight major exhibitions for a total of 75 events.
From 15 to 21 April 2024 5Vie returns, the district of FuoriSalone in Milan, with the5Vie Design Week 2024 in the historic center between Corso Magenta, Sant'Ambrogio and the Colonne di San Lorenzo.
New this year: the new Palazzo Litta venue, which adds to the other locations, and hosts works of art by designers from all over the world.
There are numerous projects in the 5Vie circuit, which revolve around the macro theme Unlimited design orchestra, a polyphony of proposals, objects, installations, exhibitions and unexpected places, from the Indian "supermarket". by Gunjan Gupta, curated by Maria Cristina Didero, at the sound willow, an oasis of peace and meditation, by Sara Ricciardi.
The theme of 5Vie Design Week 2024
The event, now in its eleventh edition, this year has the theme Unlimited design orchestra, where orchestra is to be understood in the Greek manner, as a place of performance, and as< strong> a group of people who interact like musicians and generate harmonious relationships and shared human vibrations.
A coexistence, that between human beings, which in an increasingly digitalized and unequal era is struggling to materialize. 5Vie with Unlimited design orchestra wants to connect, bring closer, go beyond walls and break down distances, tracing in design and the universality of artistic language the dimension in which human beings can meet and talk.
What to see during 5Vie Design Week for the FuoriSalone 2024: events not to be missed
The eight productions of 5VIE:
Indian tiny mega store
5VIE headquarters via Cesare Correnti 14
A typical Indian supermarket, offered in miniature, animated by engaging music, spicy flavours, changing colors and oriental scents. It is Indian tiny mega store by the Indian designer Gunjan Gupta, curated by Maria Cristina Didero.
A "little big" shop representing, in the artist's intentions, a democratization of design that should be accessible to everyone. On display are twenty-one everyday handcrafted artefacts selected by the creative and displayed on wooden shelves dating back to the 18th century.
The number twenty-one, “ikkis” in Hindi, refers to the twenty-first century, an era in which sequence, modularity and symmetry influence, according to Indian creativity, the way to plan man's life; twenty-one is also the number "eternally significant and symbolic, in both physical and spiritual spheres", continues Gunjan Gupta. Plus, a capsule collection dedicated to Milan and the colors of Ettore Sottsass.
Under the willow tree
5VIE headquarters, Palazzo Litta, Corso Magenta 24
Under the branches of a willow, a tree symbolizing the cycle of life, the female cycle and lunar power. An enchanted nature, beneficial and healing, where you can take refuge, meditate and rediscover peace and yourself.
After last year's human mandala, Sara Ricciardi promises to amaze us once again with Under the willow tree, the installation at Palazzo Litta formed from sinuous willow branches that become harmonious, capable of producing acoustic vibrations through small metal bells which, in the wind or as people pass by, return a melody that seems like an ancestral call.
Antica Fabbrica Passamanerie Massia Vittorio 1843 Torino creates the textile fronds, the sound is handled by Paolo Borghi, a music therapist and musician capable of singing the sound balance of the bar chimes of the branches, the sound carpet is curated by the Glauck company which, through invisible speakers, spreads sound tracks capable of recalling a walk in nature among rivers, songs and wind.
Salvage
5VIE Headquarters, Palazzo Litta, Corso Magenta 24
His research starts from global upheavals and, in particular, from the waste alarm. It is Jay Sae Jung Oh, a designer of Korean origins currently living in Seattle, author of the Salvage series, on display in the historic setting of the palazzo Litta: unique pieces of art made by recovering abandoned objects by wrapping them in thin layers of jute or raw leather, as if to protect and save them.
“Unlike fine arts, design has a greater responsibility to provide the best solution”, explains the creative, “most of my design inspirations derive from awareness of social issues such as sustainability and abundance of waste. Our throwaway culture makes me increasingly interested in objects that people waste or consider priceless.” A criticism of consumerism, but also work on memory and the power of objects to give us back our experience.
Take and eat
5VIE Headquarters, Palazzo Litta, Corso Magenta 24
Serena Cancellieri, Ron Arad, Giopato & Coombes, MA! Studio, Daria Dazzan, Marie Eklund. They are some of the protagonists of Take and Eat, curated by Linda Pilar Zanolla, the investigation into the idea of the table, sharing, relationships and human connections. On display are kitchen utensils, plates, glasses, trays interpreted by designers, primordial objects, folk, ready-mades and object trouvés, not unique collector's items but designed to be used, stacked, grouped, hung, layered. To put it in Claude Levi-Strauss's words, "the objects are witnesses, over the centuries, that something really happened among human beings".
Omi Iyọ
5VIE Headquarters, Palazzo Litta, Corso Magenta 24
Among the new protagonists of the 5Vie circuit, the Nigerian designer Nifemi Marcus-Bello, with the moving installation Omi Iyọ curated by Anna Carnick. A work that resembles the hull of a boat and recounts the dramatic journeys of migrants. At the beginning of the week, Omi Iyọ - which means salt water in Yoruba, the designer's native language - will be filled with salt, which will flowlike an hourglass from an opening at the bottom of the object, creating a pattern of salt crystals.
Shadows&poems
5VIE Headquarters, Palazzo Litta, Corso Magenta 24
They recover the traditional sombrerería technique to make Spanish sombreros: they are the creative Eliurpi, that is, Elisabet Urpí and Nacho Umpiérrez. The couple, protagonists of the Shadows&poems exhibition curated by Mr.Lawrence, create their own universe starting from a simple thread of straw, their material of choice, which they transform with transversal languages and research that transcends paradigms and categories.
Natural selection
5VIE Headquarters, Palazzo Litta, Corso Magenta 24
Natural selection, a project by Kostas Lambridis, developed during the #2 Rooted flows residency of INResidence in Turin. The project is enigmatically described as follows: “Carlo Mollino is dead. The Po and the Dora still descend from the Alps and burst into life from the center of Turin. Egyptian lilies emerge from the darkness of the depths to the light of the surface. The trees spread their roots like veins under the stone buildings and churches. The 'Natural Selection' is a fountain and the water circulates continuously. That's how it goes."
The fifth way
online
The fifth way is a metaverse of 5Ways with two paths: the first is a 3D exhibition of the works of designers and artists from different parts of the world, who are unable to physically participate in the Milanese design week; the second path, however, is a serious game, a treasure hunt in Milan, the capital of a "Universal Union" fueled by new forms of Energy-Humanistics, to discover the history of 5Vie.
