Like many famous innovators, Nerio Alessandri began producing the first gym equipment in his home garage, in Cesena, in 1983.

Today Technogym is a leading global brand and employs over 2,500 people. On the occasion of Milan Design Week 2024, celebrates 40 years with the exhibition “Design to Move”. Conversation with the founder, “wellness designer” and CEO.

Every day 55 million people train with Technogym in 85,000 wellness centers and 400,000 private homes in over 100 countries around the world where the company is present.

Founded in 1983 by Nerio Alessandri, over the years it has evolved from a fitness equipment company to a complete ecosystem for wellness lifestyle and boasts numerous firsts: since the launch in 1996 of first software in the fitness sector, first training product connected to the Internet in 2006; from the presentation of the first cloud platform in the sector in 2012, up to the recent launch of TechnogymLive, an on-demand video training platform dedicated to fitness , sport and prevention.

He immediately combined innovation with design, winning over 50 international awards including the Compasso d'Oro and the Red Dot Design Award.

The wellness-design combination: not only have you changed the sector by moving from fitness to wellness, but you have established a relationship with design

Nerio Alessandri: "Design has always been a key element of our journey, a strong ally in transforming the functional into emotional and needs into aspirations.

I believe that harmony and beauty are always much more attractive to people than basic functionality. I have always considered myself more of a Wellness Designer than an entrepreneur.

In the history of Technogym I think it was fundamental to position itself in the world also as a "design company" and certainly today Technogym is the only design company in the world of fitness and sport".

How do you celebrate your 40th and what do you present during the Milan Design Week?

Nerio Alessandri: "We celebrate our anniversary with the special exhibition “Design to Move” which presents 40 Technogym Bench (complete solution for functional training, designed to combine maximum variety of exercises with the smallest possible footprint, as well as one of the brand's iconic products) unique, interpreted by 40 designers and artists from all over the world.

The exhibition explores the special and profound relationship between design and wellness, style and functionality, emotional and physical aspect, which represents a key element of Technogym's identity since its birth.

Using the Technogym Bench as a blank canvas, “Design to Move” features the unique creations of designers such as Antonio Citterio, Nendo, Patricia Urquiola, Kelly Hoppen, Piero Lissoni, Walter de Silva, Rolf Sachs, Elena Salmistraro, Michele Bönan, and many others , with the aim of offering a vision and an original interpretation of the movement. The special project was planned and visually conceived together with the architect and designer Giulio Cappellini and the curator Bruna Roccasalva.

Today there is connected wellness: what do we expect for the future?

Nerio Alessandri: "Innovation has always been the engine of Technogym's growth. Our research center has around 200 professionals including engineers, doctors and designers and the culture of innovation permeates not only the product, but all company areas: from marketing, to human resources management, to logistics and production.

To give some examples, already in 1996, when the internet was in its infancy, we launched the Wellness System, the first software platform for training management; in 2002 we launched , first in the world, the television integrated into the fitness equipment, in 2007 the first fitness product connected online and in 2012 the first cloud platform in the fitness and sports sector".

"Today, thanks to artificial intelligence we are able to offer each user their own wellness program anywhere and at any time, based on their fitness level, personal preferences and goals.

In the future, hyperpersonalization awaits us, that is, a specific program for each individual that combines sport, wellness and health".
