1,500 square meters of relaxation: from the color palette to the arrangement of the furnishings, everything in this private residence evokes the much-desired state of holiday tranquility

The house we are talking about this week is called 'The Balsam House' and, just as the name suggests, it tells of an interior design project that, just by looking at it, gives a feeling of relief. Like a balm, it refreshes the spirits and encourages the desire to escape that pervades the minds in these days before the summer break.

Located in Pune, in Western India, the house was built to measure for the needs of an adult couple - he is a pilot who often travels and is currently based in Africa, she is a pastry chef - who wanted to give shape to a refuge-place in which to experience relaxed moments of reunion, after work.

Leading the project was architect Ketaki Poonawala who identified a color palette of soft colors and evocative textures to frame the 1,500 square meters of residence.

Stylistic antipodes compared

In addition to the needs arising from the owners' two professions, the designer also included in the project's priorities other prerogatives expressly born from the stylistic preferences of the two spouses: the husband, in fact, wanted a house with a modern, simple and functional style; the wife, who had always grown up in the city, but in a large traditional stone bungalow furnished with numerous period furniture and works of art, wanted not to neglect her roots, giving the new home a reminder - albeit subtle - of memory and origins.

The key to sociability

Measurements with two very distant needs, has allowed the designer to already thoroughly probe the inclinations of the family unit, discovering an area common to all the inhabitants of the house, including the children.

The owner of the house, in fact, is a well-known pastry chef in the city and surrounding areas: her culinary skills, combined with the passion for badminton that unites her to her daughter with whom she competes at a national level, mean that their home is a regular meeting place for friends, acquaintances and relatives who have been used to meeting for some time now.

A clue that led the architect to design a project with a convivial language, where tranquility and good humor emerge from every detail. A perfect place to host evenings and meet friends, which speaks of harmony and relaxed conviviality.

Exotic flavor in harmony with the greenery all around

The spaces, therefore, were designed to convey harmony: a neutral palette is completed with hints of color in pastel shades that give character to the spaces depending on their function, always dialoguing with the exterior where an evergreen nature typical of the area prevails.

The entrance hall welcomes you with a wooden console complete with chevron handles detailed in black and white, which acts as an escort towards an open space in which the living area and kitchen coexist, the latter characterized by a large breakfast area at the counter.

In terms of style, the kitchen experiments with an almost country atmosphere thanks to the sage green panel shutters and the majolica-like floor tiles that differ from the more classic neutral marble that characterizes the entire house.

On the other hand, it is a central space, in which the owner of the residence spends many hours every day experimenting with the stove and interacting with her family.

The sleeping areas

The master bedroom maintains a simple atmosphere but always connected to the balanced dimension of the entire project: the attention is paid to the optimization of each space, so that it remains essential and harmonious.

For the daughter, a badminton player and also passionate about cooking like her mother, a bedroom completely covered in tropical print wallpaper and white furnishings with cannelée effect panels.

The third bedroom, on the other hand, combines wood with beige and blue upholstery.

The balcony, characterized by rustic textured wood tiles and black and white zigzag inlays, follows the same dynamics of the entire house, always dialoguing with the panorama it overlooks: green hills with a peaceful and serene atmosphere. Most evenings, this area, which hosts a complete bar space, opens up to become an integral part of the living and dining area.
