Vitra has acquired the Finnish company Artek. Artek is a renowned design studio founded in 1935 in Finland by the architect Alvar Aalto, his wife Aino, the art patron Maire Gullichsen and the art historian Nils-Gustav Hahl, based on the radical business idea of “selling furnishings and promoting the modern culture of living through exhibitions and other educational tools.” Artek is one of the artistic projects that has made the greatest contribution, thanks to many innovations, to the development of modern design, creating the artistic legacy of Alvar Aalto. Artek will continue to exist as a separate firm, though different synergies between operations of production, distribution and logistics will be explored.
