As the best possible conclusion, we have set aside a small cadeau for our readers: an article on Ivo Pannaggi, an eclectic designer, ahead of his time and relatively unknown today, who can be considered the sole Italian exponent of the famous German school. From the furnishings in metal tubing to those in Macassar wood, expressing an idea of luxury without ornament, his creations narrate the lesson of Mies van der Rohe and the art avant-gardes of the 20th century from an Italian perspective.

The works of architecture examined in this issue focus on the various potentialities of international design to build metaphorical ‘bridges’ that join inhabited worlds, particular landscapes and histories. Everything speaks of a compositional synthesis suspended between opposites, in a constant tension between antique and contemporary, experimentation with materials and reinterpretation of what already exists.

The Twist, the new museum in Norway created by the Danish architect Bjarke Ingels, founder of the studio BIG, like a ‘tube’ twisting over a river. The playful and technical ‘box’ with staggered, rotated levels of the Experimenta Science Center by the firm Sauerbruch Hutton in Germany. The welcoming psychological support center of Kálida Sant Pau designed by Benedetta Tagliabue and Patricia Urquiola in Barcelona.

Finally, three private homes with a thousand stories to tell: that of the sea in Tel Aviv reinvented by Pitsou Kedem around an Ottoman patio; the bed&breakfast by the studio Archiplan in the historical center of Mantua with a view of Leon Battista Alberti; and the self-portrait house by David Jameson in the hilly forests of Maryland.
