The innovative design of Aecom and Pininfarina has been selected as the winner of the international competition for the regional Air Traffic Control tower (ATC) and the technical building of the new Istanbul airport.

The winning solution combines influences from the automotive and aviation sectors with forceful architectural design. The project developed by Aecom, the leading company of integrated global infrastructures, and Pininfarina was chosen from six solutions proposed by international architecture firms, including Zaha Hadid, Fuksas, Moshe Safdie, Grimshaw-Nordic and RMJM.

The control tower of the new Istanbul airport, one of the largest on a global level, will be an iconic structure visible to all the passengers passing through the facility.

The design by Aecom and Pininfarina evokes the aerodynamic forms used in automotive and aeronautic design, creating an elliptical tower that will be visible to all incoming and outgoing passengers. The form is based on that of the tulip, the symbol of Istanbul for many centuries and an important cultural reference point in the history of Turkey.
