At the start of 2016 a new building with enhance the Vitra Campus at Weil am Rhein: Vitra Schaudepot, designed by the architects Herzog & de Meuron, will contain a portion of the vast collection of the Vitra Design Museum. Konstantin Grcic will do the interiors.
Vitra Design Museum is one of the world’s most important design museums and presents exhibitions and events on both design and architecture. The museum offers guided tours to the exhibits and the architectural works at the Vitra Campus, with a cafe and a museum store.
In the main building, designed by Frank Gehry, two large exhibitions are held each year. In parallel, the Vitra Design Museum Gallery hosts experimental projects and shows. The exhibitions in progress are listed below.
The Vitra Campus is not just a corporate museum, but a unique collection of contemporary architecture assembled by one of the most prestigious manufacturers of furnishings in the world, a company whose name is connected with those of the great modern designers. One example will suffice: Charles and Ray Eames.
The buildings created on the Campus are sixteen to date, demonstrating that the Vitra Campus represents a place of experimentation for designers, if we consider the fact that the Fire Station was the first building made by Zaha Hadid, and the Conference Pavilion was the first work built by Tadao Ando outside of Japan.
