Iosa Ghini Associati designs the new Starhotels E.ch.o Bologna, in front of the agriculture park Fico Eataly World

The design of the structure and the interiors has been entrusted to the architecture firm Iosa Ghini Associati. The facility will have the Starhotels brand, in a pact with PAI-Parchi Agroalimentari Italiani, founded and managed by Prelios SGR. The construction should be completed by the second half of 2020.

The new hotel will be a 4-star facility based on the structural and functional regeneration of the former flower and nursery market of Bologna. In a perspective of ecosustainability and zero land consumption, the existing building will not be demolished but regenerated to meet the needs of the new hospitality facility.

We have worked on conserving the existing structures as fully as possible,” Iosa Ghini says. “To transform an essentially industrial space into a hotel, we have created a series of islands inside this space of 12,000 square meters. There will be internal areas, glazed courtyards from which light can enter in a homogeneous way, faced by hotel rooms of different sizes.”

The hotel will have about 200 rooms: in particular, the new role is evident thanks to the insertion of amenities for entertainment, like the garden and swimming pool in the outdoor zone, while the internal area will contain services, meeting and conference rooms, a breakfast zone and cafe, the reception, offices, three pools, a fitness center and a spa.

The whole project has a green touch that reflects the importance of ecosustainability for Starhotels. "We pay close attention to the use of materials and technologies,” Iosa Ghini continues. “So we have made extensive use of wood, and other certified ecological materials. In terms of technology, the hotel stands next to a photovoltaic field, and we have designed an extremely ‘virtuous’ geothermal system for climate control and hot water.”
